Limited space? A folding frame clothesline is a smart, compact solution – perfect for maximising drying area without crowding a small yard or balcony. Here’s our step-by-step guide for how to install a folding frame clothesline on a brick or masonry wall.
What you’ll need:
- Measuring tape
- Pencil and level
- Drill with an 8 mm masonry bit
- Safety gear (gloves, eye protection, ear protection)
- Masonry fixings (e.g. screws or bolts)
- Impact driver or screwdriver
- Spanner or adjustable wrench
- Side-arm brackets and front crossbar (included with many NZ Clotheslines models)
- Scissors (if needed to trim thread ends)
Steps to install your folding frame clothesline
Choose and mark your spot
Decide exactly where the drying arms will hang. Position one bracket at the chosen start point and pencil-mark the fixing holes. Measure across (the width will depend on your clothesline model – some brands provide a template), then mark the second bracket, ensuring both are level using a spirit level.
Pre-drill your fixing points
Using your hammer drill and masonry bit, carefully drill pilot holes at the marked points. Brick or concrete can be noisy and messy – make sure your safety gear is on.
Secure the brackets in place
Insert your masonry fixings and use your impact driver or wrench to attach both brackets. Use the level again to confirm they’re straight and aligned.
Fit the side arms
Secure the clothesline’s side arm components to the wall brackets using the included hardware. Tighten with a spanner or Allen key for a firm fit.
Attach the front bar
Assemble the front crossbar according to the manufacturer’s instructions and slide it into the side arms. It should click or slot securely into place.
Thread the clothesline cord
Run your line through the holes in the arms and bar, adjusting your tension as preferred. Trim any excess cord if needed and knot or secure it neatly.
Final touches
Once fitted, your wall-mounted clothesline will fold away neatly when not in use, freeing up space and keeping things tidy.
